Before You Build a College List, Ask These Five Questions

A college list is easier to build when you understand what you want from the experience. You do not need a finished career plan. You do need a starting point that belongs to you.

1. What makes you curious?

Think about the subjects, conversations and projects you return to without being asked. What would you like more time to explore? Start with examples from your life rather than trying to name a perfect major.

2. Where do you do your best work?

Consider class size, teaching style, structure and independence. Do you enjoy discussion, practical projects or working quietly through a difficult problem? Your preferred learning environment deserves a place alongside academic ambition.

3. What kind of life could you build there?

Look beyond the campus photograph. Think about community, location, distance from home and the support you would want when things get difficult. If you are considering another country, ask what adapting to a different academic and cultural environment would involve.

4. What are your real constraints?

Talk openly about cost, travel, family circumstances and time. A useful shortlist reflects those realities. Confirm current fees, application requirements and available support directly with each institution.

5. What do you want an admissions reader to understand about you?

Your application is more than a list of accomplishments. Which experiences show how you think, what matters to you and how you contribute? You remain the author. Good coaching helps you recognize your stories and communicate them in your own voice.
